The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore is written by Nora and Delia Ephron and is a play of monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes and memory that covers all the important subjects—mothers, prom dresses, mothers, buying bras, mothers, hating purses and why we only wear black. Based on the bestselling book by Ilene Beckerman, Love, Loss, and What I Wore uses clothing, accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories about matters of the heart and matters of the closet.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore is directed by Suzy Willhoft and features the talents of Ellen Peters, Chevi Chung, Deya Ozburn, Ashley MacPhall, and Sharry O’Hare.

Love, Loss, and What I Wore will play Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 7:30pm.  Tickets are $10.00 for all seats and may be purchased online at www.tacomalittletheatre.com, or by calling our Box Office at (253) 272-2281.  A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood.

Pay what you can:  Thursday, December 10

Special Added Performance: Thursday, December 17

A Holiday Favorite brought to life on stage Humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940’s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher, and even Santa Claus himself. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved movie are here, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a leg lamp, Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more.

Second Samuel

January 22-February 7, 2016
PWYC-Thursday, February 4

Laugh, be moved, but don’t leave unchanged

It was a simpler time in the late 1940’s, especially in South Georgia in a sleepy little town called Second Samuel. The Great Depression was quickly fading into memory, the war had been won, and “Give ‘em Hell Harry” was still president. Folks in Second Samuel were ready for things to settle down and get back to normal. Except—this was the summer Miss Gertrude passed away, and deep dark secrets were about to be revealed. Nobody could have imagined how the death of one sweet little old lady would turn the entire town upside down. Would anything ever be normal again?

OF MICE AND MEN AUDITIONS

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2016 6:00PM-9:00PM
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2016 7:00PM-10:00PM

Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for its production of OF MICE AND MEN, directed by Niclas Olson.

Auditions will be held Sunday, November 6th and Monday, November 7th at Tacoma Little Theatre. Audition appointments will be set between the times of 6:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm-10:00pm on Monday. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, November 9th.

Please prepare a monologue 1-2 minutes in length.

To submit and audition please call or email Tacoma Little Theatre to schedule an appointment.

Two traveling companions, George and Lennie, wander the country during the Depression, dreaming of a better life for themselves. Then, just as heaven is within their grasp, it is inevitably yanked away. The script follows Steinbeck's novel closely, exploring questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality and utopia, bringing Steinbeck's California to life.

Of Mice and Men will perform January 20-February 5, 2017

Roles are available for the following:
Lennie: 20-30’s; Large, lumbering character with a childlike mentality. Does not understand his own strength.

George: 20-30s; Small, wiry, quick-witted man who travels with and cares for Lennie. George’s behavior is motivated by the desire to protect Lennie and dreams of owning his own farm.

Candy: 50’s-60s; An aging ranch handyman, Candy lost his hand in an accident and worries about his future on the ranch. Fears that his age is making him useless.

The Boss: 40s-50s; The stocky, well-dressed man in charge of the ranch, and Curley’s father. He is never named and appears only once, but seems to be a fair-minded man.

Curley: 20’s; The boss’s son, he is a confrontational, mean-spirited, and aggressive young man who seeks to compensate for his small stature by picking fights with larger men. Recently married, Curley is plagued with jealous suspicions and is extremely possessive of his flirtatious young wife.

Curley’s Wife: 20’s; The only female character in the story. The men on the farm refer to her as a “tramp,” a “tart,” and a “looloo.” She represents the temptation of female sexuality in a male-dominated world. Like the ranch-hands, she is desperately lonely and has broken dreams of a better life.

Slim: 40-50s; The acknowledged “prince” of the ranch, Slim is the only character who seems to be at peace with himself. The other characters often look to Slim for advice.

Carlson: 30s-40s; A ranch-hand, Carlson complains bitterly about Candy’s old, smelly dog. He convinces Candy to put the dog out of its misery.

Whit: any age; a ranch hand; gives back story to some of the play’s characters.

Crooks: 40s-50s; Crooks, the black stable-hand, gets his name from his crooked back. Proud, bitter, and caustically funny, he is isolated from the other men because of the color of his skin.

$125.00 for participants

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for an intensive, three-day workshop in Musical Theatre Audition Technique led by star of stage and screen, Kip Niven. All participants will learn about the perils, the frustrations, and — believe it or not — the joys of auditioning for a role in a musical.

WHAT YOU GET

Participants will receive one-on-one coaching and feedback from Mr. Niven to help them apply these techniques to improve their audition.

To schedule an appointment, please call or email Tacoma Little Theatre.

Please prepare a monologue 1-2 minutes in length, and one song form the Golden Era of Broadway. An accompanist will be provided.

A crowning achievement in American musical theatre, Gypsy tells the story of Mama Rose, the ultimate stage mother, and her hopes and dreams for her daughters, June and Louise. As the lights of Vaudeville are dimming, Louise steps into the spotlight as Gypsy Rose Lee and rises to become one of the most famed burlesque performers of all time. Just like Mama Rose, Gypsy is brassy, bold, and sexy.

GYPSY will perform March 10-April 2, 2017

All roles are available and all ethnicities are encouraged to audition.

• Momma Rose (ages from 35 - 50) The ultimate stage mother. Lives her life vicariously through her two daughters, whom she's put into show business. She is loud, brash, pushy and single-minded, but at times can be doting and charming. She is holding down demons of her own that she is afraid to face. Her voice is the ultimate powerful Broadway belt. Minimal dance but must move well. Comic timing a must. Strong Mezzo/Alto with good low notes and belt.

• Baby June (about 10) is a Shirley Temple-like up-and-coming vaudeville star, and Madam Rose's youngest daughter. Her onstage demeanor is sugary-sweet, cute, precocious and adorable to the nth degree. An adorable character - Mama Rose's shining star. Strong child singer, strong dancer and taps. Mezzo.

• Young Louise (about 12) She should look a couple years older than Baby June. She is Madam Rose's brow-beaten oldest daughter, and has always played second fiddle to her baby sister. She is shy, awkward, a little sad and subdued; she doesn't have the confidence of her sister. Strong acting skills needed. The character always dances slightly out of step but the actress playing this part must be able to dance. Mezzo singer.

• Herbie (about 30-50) agent for Rose's children and Rose's boyfriend and a possible husband number 4. He has a heart of gold but also has the power to defend the people he loves with strength. Minimum dance. A Baritone, sings in one group number, two duets and trio with Rose and Louise. Strong acting role.

• Dainty June (16-24) Baby June as a young teenager. The older she gets, the less she enjoys being her mother's trained monkey. Strong Alto, must be able to belt a song and have decent dancing skills. The ability to do the splits and twirl a baton a big plus, but not a requirement. Must dance very well, taps, strong Broadway teen singer, close harmony skills preferred.

• Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee (18 - 25) Baby Louise as a teenager, who grows up to be Gypsy Rose Lee. Still pushed aside by Madam Rose in favor of June, until she herself becomes her mother's new pet project. Should be able to move well. Actress must be 18 or over to play this role. Minimum actual dance but must have very strong movement skills, strong acting skills needed. Must be able to portray both the awkward teen and a sophisticated woman we know now as Gypsy Rose Lee. Must dance inside a dancing cow costume, must be comfortable with the character's profession - stripping. The character is very scantily clad but never actual appears in the nude. Mezzo (needs light sound for "little Lamb" and belt for "Let Me Entertain You."

• Dressy Tessie Tura (20s-40s) a stripper just past her prime. Big Broadway voice (Mezzo Belt), strong movement/dance, ballet training helpful. A burlesque dancer that shares her dressing room with Louise. She was once a ballerina and still has some of the moves. A coarse broad who's been around the block. Very funny.

• Mazeppa (20s-40s) a stripper just past her prime. Big Broadway voice (Alto Belt), strong movement/dance, powerful character. A burlesque dancer who's tough and physically intimidating. Trumpet playing skills would be outstanding but not required.

• Electra (20s-40s) a stripper just past her prime. Big Broadway voice (Mezzo Belt), strong movement/dance. Quieter than her counterparts but her costume is wired with lights, allowing her to "shine" without working up a sweat. Ditzy and sweet.

• Cratchitt (any age over 20) the production assistant for the Grantzinger theater, N.Y.C. The comedic role.

• Children's Ensemble (ages 10 -12) Two or three young boys and one young girl. Baby June's back up dancers and singers. Ability of one child to play accordion or clarinet a plus. Must sing and dance.

• Young Women's Ensemble (ages 20 - 30) singer/dancers who act as both the back up dancers for Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee and perform in the large burlesque numbers in the second act. Strong dancers. Some comic skills very helpful. Very minimal singing. A few have minor expanded roles.

• Agnes (20-30) one of the women's dancing chorus, strong comic skills required.

• Young Men's Ensemble (ages 16 -20) Six young men sing and dance backup for teenage June, plus join in the number "Have an Eggroll, Mr. Goldstone." Should be strong singers and dancers. Will double as small parts in Act I and Act II, plus some backup dancing in Gypsy's strip routine. Must be very strong dancers and singers. Comic time preferred.

• Tulsa (age 17 - 20) Boy-next-door type. Strives to break out of the troupe with an act of his own. Sings and dances "All I Need Is the Girl." Extremely strong dancer in all styles of show dance including tap. Good singer, charming, very athletic and handsome young man. High Baritone.

• Kringelin (adult male character over 35) the put upon manager of a hotel.

• Mr. Goldstone (any age over 30) Booking agent for the Orpheum Theater Circuit. Chaplin-like skills a must never speaks.

• Cigar (adult male, age 30-50) rather aggressive owner of a burlesque theatre, Classic character part.

• Pastey (any age) Cigar's stage manager.

• Chowsie A small dog (with a good temperament).

BIRDS FROM THE THICKET

Tacoma Little Theatre welcomes local author, and radio host, Gerry Bradley, to their stage with his one-man show, BIRDS FROM THE THICKET, based on his book.

Gerry Bradley reaches out with a hand of hope to the 2.3 million people suffering from Bi-Polar/Manic Depression and those close to them. It is an autobiographical account that takes the listener through the joys and sorrows of the authors life. Gerry Bradley found his way back from the highs and lows to the "light at the end of the tunnel". He now lives a rewarding and fulfilling life and you can too.  The afternoon spans the range of human emotion; at times it's a labor of love, by others, a labor of despair. Yet with honesty, courage, and grace the author has set the story to the stage. It is at once an accounting of the author's personal history as well, as an accounting of American history--the journey of an Oklahoma boy who found his way back home by examining his heart--it's a hero's journey.

BIRDS FROM THE THICKET-AN AFTERNOON WITH MR. CHIT CHAT will perform Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 3:00pm.  This show is recommended for all 12 and up.

Tickets are $15.00 and may be purchased online here or by calling our Box Office at (253) 272-2281

No two stories are ever the same and infinite new stories are just waiting to be found.

Tacoma Musical Playhouse
January 24-February 16

Beehive is the ultimate celebration of 1960’s female empowerment. Featuring such timeless classics as “My Boyfriend’s Back”, “Be My Baby”, “Son of a Preacher Man”, and “Me and Bobby McGee”, Beehive nostalgically recalls the days of miniskirts, transistor radios and flower power. Told from the perspective of six young women who came of age in this enigmatic decade, these young ladies look back on a host of issues ranging from their first Beehive Dance to the challenges we faced as a nation – all accomplished by a vast array of the most celebrated and memorable songs of the era.
